Top 10 Electric Vehicle Manufacturers in India: July 2026 Sales & Growth Analysis

India's electric passenger vehicle (e-PV) market maintained its strong momentum in July 2026, with the industry crossing the 30,000-unit mark for the second consecutive month. While overall volumes dipped slightly from June's record, year-on-year growth remained explosive, underscoring how deeply EVs have penetrated the mainstream passenger vehicle market.

According to Vahan registration data, India registered 32,609 electric passenger vehicles in July 2026, an 83% jump over July 2025's 17,823 units — though marginally down from June 2026's record 33,307 units. EV penetration held steady at roughly 7.7% of the overall passenger vehicle market.

The Story Behind the Numbers

Tata Motors extends its dominance. Tata posted its best-ever monthly EV performance, crossing the 40% market share mark for the first time in a long while. The Nexon EV remains its volume anchor, while the updated Tiago EV and the recently launched Punch EV are pulling in a large share of first-time EV buyers. Tata has now sold over 12,000 EVs in two straight months — a first for the company — with April–July cumulative sales up 108% year-on-year.

Mahindra holds strong at #2. Despite a slight month-on-month dip, Mahindra grew 125% year-on-year — the fastest pace among the top manufacturers. Its born-electric BE 6 and XEV 9e continue to see strong demand, and the newly launched XEV 9S, the brand's first three-row electric SUV, adds further depth to its lineup. Together, Tata and Mahindra now account for close to two-thirds of India's total EV sales.

MG Motor loses ground. JSW MG's market share has nearly halved compared to a year ago (from 33% to 16%), even though the Windsor EV remains its best-seller. Rising competition from Tata and Mahindra, along with Maruti's and VinFast's market entry, is visibly eating into MG's early-mover advantage.

Maruti Suzuki's steady climb. The e Vitara logged its fifth straight month of four-digit sales, though July volumes eased 20% from June's record as a larger share of production continues to be allocated to exports. This is expected to improve with a new manufacturing line coming online at Maruti's Gujarat plant.

VinFast's best month yet. The Vietnamese entrant recorded its highest-ever monthly sales in July, narrowly surpassing its June record. Commercial-use models continue to drive the bulk of its volumes.

Notable smaller movers: Kia's sales surged over 600% year-on-year on the back of its new Carens Clavis EV, though they eased slightly from June. BYD grew nearly 50% year-on-year. Meanwhile, established players like Hyundai and Citroën saw year-on-year declines, and ultra-luxury brands like Audi and Rolls-Royce recorded zero EV sales in July.

Key Takeaways

Market concentration remains high — Tata and Mahindra alone command nearly two-thirds of all EV sales in India.

New entrants are gaining real traction — Maruti Suzuki and VinFast, both relatively new to India's EV space, are already outselling several established international brands.

Growth is broad-based but uneven — while the overall market grew 83% year-on-year, established players like MG and Hyundai are losing share even as the pie itself expands.

The affordability wave continues — mass-market models (Nexon, Punch, Tiago, Windsor, e Vitara) dominate volumes, while luxury EVs remain a small (~2%) slice of the market.
